First of all, I’m definitely not writing this while I’m on the stationary bike at the gym. That would be preposterous because I’m so committed to my fitness that I’d never be able to focus on anything but cardio…
I am playing some catch up with the books I’ve read this year and so I’m gonna do some mini reviews of the books I read in May. Mini mini reviews.
I read some reaaaaaally, exceptionally amazing OMGOMGOMG fangirling crazy books, some pretty good, some I didn’t finish and some eh okay ones.
I’ll start with the lowest ranked of May.
Empress of a Thousand Skies
Read: May 4th be with you-NEVER!
Rating: No stars!
I DNF this book. I feel like this book didn’t really have a chance. There was a certain book that came out that ruined all books for me forever (discussed later in this post) and this book was the sacrificial book that I started after I finished that book. I read a few chapters and just gave up. It wasn’t holding my attention and I had a major book hangover. I couldn’t even tell you what this book is about besides and empress(?) I think?
Read: May 23-May 24
Rating: 3/5 stars 🌟🌟🌟
I got an ARC of this book (thank you Netgalley) and I must say for a debut novel this book wasn’t half bad. Or maybe it was exactly half bad.
I mean. It was okay. I would’ve preferred more action, but oh well.
I will say that I LOVED the diversity of this book. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY WHITE PEOPLE IN YA LIT?! Emmett is African American and I absolutely loved him. Probably exclusively for this reason. He was actually pretty weak sauce as a character…but maybe that’s okay…
Would I recommend this? Probably more suitable for 15-17 year olds rather than older 20 and 30 somethings who are still clinging to the YA genre like myself.
Read: May 17-20
Rating: 4 stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
I just have to start by talking about Reneé’s previous series, Wrath and the Dawn. Maybe I shouldn’t and I should think of this independently but I don’t want to and I do want I want.
Rose and the Dagger was the second book in that duology and it was good buuuut it was a let down and it could’ve been so much more.
Flame in the Mist was like Rose and the Dagger.
Here’s the thing. I love books with big casts if they are done correctly. If I can identify the different voices of each character, there is an emotional connection the mc has to characters and they’re just enjoyable characters. This book had a big cast but I didn’t feel that development. It wasn’t terrible, the potential was there for me to really connect with these characters but it didn’t happen.
I think a few years ago I would’ve given this book 5 stars, but I’ve read too many books recently that have had incredible development of characters.
I recommend this book and I hope the next book picks up on the action. And okay the romance too!
Speaking of incredible casts of characters:
Reread: May 12-16
Rating: ALL THE HEARTBREAKING STARS!!
I reread these books (yes I suck and didn’t reread Morning Star, just the last chapter and epilogue and still bawled my eyes out) and it was so much better the second time!
Oh. My. Gosh. This series. Its written by a man which is completely obvious right from the start of this book. Darrow is so masculine and caring and broken and I was genuinely scared for him…oh…the entire series. There’s never one second of this series where you think, “oh good, a break from the insanity!” NO! IT IS ALWAYS CRAZY AND HORRIBLE AND I LOVE IT!
All the stars. All of them. For making me love a million characters and ripping my heart out and stomping on it and then making it all better again and again.
Reread: May 24-26
Rating: 5 Stars
Reread. Amazing. SJM is just perfection. Not gonna write anything else about this. Just go read this series.
Read: May 28 BINGE READ DAY!
Stars: ALL THE STARS! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
WHAT. A. CUTE. BOOK!!!!!!! Guys. This book. Omg. So cute. I was so giddy reading this book. This was literally me around my house reading this book.
It’s a retelling of Cinderella so you basically know what’s going to happen but OMG. SO. CUTE. Do I need to say it again? And the best part?
DARIEN! You had me African American love interest. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
For real, I need more diversity in books. Like right now.
And last but first in my heart forever and ever and ever amen:
Read: May 2-4
Rating: #1 IN MY HEART FOREVER!
I waited a whole year for this book genuinely scared for what was going to happen. While I loved SJM she hadn’t finished a series yet. Throne of Glass is just going to go on forever and ever (freaking Chaol novel 🙄) and I was afraid that while all her books are amazing, she may not know how to finish a series. Was she going to pull an Allegiant and freaking kill the series for me? Was EVERYONE going to die?!
Oh Sarah. You brilliant magical unicorn. There’s so much I want to say but I’ll leave this spoiler free. Maybe I’ll do a whole post just about this series and cry the whole time. This book was nothing short of brilliance. While A Court of Mist and Fury is my absolute favorite from this series, this book was such a spectacular ending to the series.
Minus…all the sex scenes. Gross. I may be a grown married woman, but no. No to that business. Yikes.
I think I will have a book hangover from this series forever and all books pale in comparison to the perfection that is the story, character development, action, romance, everything! I tried to binge but this book is so long hahaha. I did, however, finish at 3am sobbing uncontrollably to myself.
I RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE! READ THIS SERIES RIGHT FLIPPING FRAKKING FUDGING NOW!!
Great month May! I’m proud of you! Also most mediocre workout of my whole life…worth it.
