Book Review

Fave reads of 2017! (So far)

At the start of the year I was starting to question whether or not there were any good books left for me to read. I would start a book, read a few chapters and DNF. I went through a solid month of reading 2 books and quitting like 10. I think I have become too picky in my assessment of books. If there’s a book that has the same Mary Jane boring lead character, same douchy love interest, and a Hunger Games type training and battling, I do not care. Read it a hundred times already and I just don’t care.

BUT I’m happy to say that 2017 has turned out to be surprisingly one of the best reading years I’ve had! And there are still so many books coming out this year that I’m looking forward to and desperate to get my hands on! (Not talking to you Chaol Throne of Glass novel. I will read you, but I refuse to like you.)

So here are some of my favourite (I write in Australian English for my jobs, so if I sneak some extra “u”s in there, you’re just gonna have to get over it) reads of 2017.

I liked this one way more than I expected to and was genuinely surprised at who Jack the Ripper ended up being. I was so surprised that it wasn’t until three days later that I realized there were still some unanswered questions left in this book. But the second one, Hunting Prince Dracula, is coming out next month and I can’t wait to get my hands on that crap. FOUR STARS!

This is another one of those books where I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoy books where the two main characters absolutely hate each other in the beginning but over time they will probably have some pretty awesome make out scenes. Cause you KNOW they are gonna get together and I love to see the little moments that make it happen.

This is one of those books where I really loved the two characters and their fighting and hate was so awesome for me to read. The companion book to this completely sucked, but as a standalone, I give this book FOUR STARS!

Geeze this book was a fun binge read. Nemesis is a Diabolic that has had some stuff altered in her brain to make her incapable of feeling and is just driven to protect and murder people. So obviously she’s my hero and I want to be her. There were a few elements to this story that were predictable but it so vastly outweighed the times where I was caught completely off guard. Great great great great read! All the stars!

Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab. I’ll be honest. I HATED The Archived even though everyone on Goodreads was like, “Omggg the greatest ever, I sold my kidney to read this series and it was worth it!!!” No. That book was terrible. And This Savage Song by VS was better, I wouldn’t say it was amazing, so when this series kept popping up I kept saying, “no” “no” “no,” because none of her work so far had really dazzled me. So FINALLY I opened my heart to Miss Schwab again and I’m so glad I did. This was such a great series that I whole heartedly accept as one of my all time favourite series. Sorry Wrath and the Dawn, you just got booted out of the top 5. All the stars!!

Oh. My. Gosh. This. Book. Freaking. Spectacular. I really enjoyed Taylor’s other series The Daughter of Smoke and Bone but Karou has nothing on Strange. He’s sweet, intelligent, caring, he’s just amazing. I want him to come to my house and bake casseroles and watch Thunder games with me. I love the originality of this story and I love the way Taylor writes. Totally binged this one and I freaking loved it. FIVE STARS!

Amani is my giiiiiiirrrrlll!!! I think I liked this one even more than the first one. And here’s what I freaking love about this book: the two main lovey dovey characters weren’t together the majority of the book but there were so many other developed and amazing characters that the story didn’t suffer because of it. I wasn’t dying because there wasn’t any banter between Amani and Jin, there was enough craziness happening without it! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I already talk about these books way too much. Loves them. Here’s the deets: May Wrap Up 2017.

So many great reads this year!!! And so many more to come!

  1. I’m so glad 2017 is working out for you. But maybe it’s time for you to look at new genres? Cause things like “same douchy love interest, and a Hunger Games type training and battling” just sounds like “too much of the same genre”. Also, this is more likely to come up only in YA.

Do you read scifi at all? Cause I have a few really good recs for those as well 🙂 I guess Starflight is sort of scifi? (Haven’t read it, so not sure)

    1. I’ve been thinking for awhile I need to change it up! My TBR is so jam packed with YA fantasy it’s out of control 😂

I read some sci-fi! Send me any recs you have!

      1. Slaves of the Switchboard of Doom totally!! If you wanna know why, I’ve recently posted about it. But really, if fantasy is what you mostly go for, then you’ll love this, cause it’s something between sci-fi and urban fantasy, and it’s also hilarious. Absolutely loved it.
And then, have you read A Long Way To A Small, Angry Planet?

  2. I really want to read Strange the Dreamer and Geekerella. I’m glad you enjoyed both of them!! I definitely have to check out some of the other books on your list.

I’m new to blogging and book reviewing, and I was wondering if you had any tips for newbie bloggers and book reviewers.

If you have the time, please check out my blog @breenysbooks. I’d love any feedback. Have a wonderful day.
